Describe a fear you had to overcome. How did you overcome it ?
In the present time, people have some or other fears. It is a human tendency to have
fears. But it is also very important to know our fears and overcome them. The fears
that are usually discussed among people are practical like fear of heights, water
or insects. Moreover, there are some mental fears too that most of the people are
suffering from but remain unnoticed.
Here, I would like to discuss about one of the major fears we all are suffering from
and that is public fear. It is often termed as social anxiety. In common, social
anxiety is the fear of being judged. It can also be sometimes a result of shyness.
The other reason might be being underconfident. The problem can also be content.
Like the person think that he does not have enough content to add on. These all the
reasons slowly and gradually lead to fear of public speaking.
However, there is not only one or two persons going through social anxiety but there
are hundreds and thousands of people might including you. In fact, the greatest
and the most famous people also had the public fear at the beginning of their career
journey.Also, this is not at all the fear that cannot be overcomed. There are several
ways to overcome it.
For instance, one of the simplest way of overcoming the social anxiety which I followed
is as described further. Firstly, expand your knowledge either by books or movies.
Like this, you will be more confident of your content. The main benefit of it is that
next time when you need to talk or give a speech, you will have enough to say about.
Basically, this is the starting point of overcoming the fear.
Secondly, begin your talks with small group of people involving either your friends
or strangers. Start your talk with your familiar topics sharing your knowledge.This
will give even more confidence. Once you are fine and comfortable with the small
group of people, try to stand out for some speech or involve yourself in an
interactive class. This method pretty works. Because the more you try to give speech
, the more you will realize your mistakes and can improve your way of speaking too.
Overall, these are the only 2 steps that I followed and overcomed my fear of public
speaking. But, this is not easy as it seems. There are a few barriers to it. The
main barrier is the public judgements. When you try to share your knowledge or
express your thoughts, there will be some people whom we can call critics who will
constantly try to let you down and lower the confidence. While there are certain
people who motivate others and help them too. If we want to get successful, always
listen to the people who are positive and motivators despite of getting influenced
by the critics.
So, in conclusion, the fear that was the major obstacle in my life was the public
fear. However, by pushing my limits I was successful in overcoming social anxiety
to a great extent.
